So I'd heard, but when I plugged one into my wife's Lombard, it just said no
AirPort card installed.

What card, what OS are you talking about.

It might work on something modern that supports AirPort (Pismo or newer), but It sure didn't work on the Lombard.

That only works in OS8/9 though, OSX will always
 require a driver.

I've not used this card or chip set but multiple sources, including the cards website, indictate they work with the Apple Airport software directly, no additional driver required.

The older 802.11b cards with the Prism chip set did work with Airport
in OS 8/9 but not X. The 802.11g cards using the Broadcom Chipset
(that's the one I couldn't remember) work with Apple Airport software.

What 802.11g PCMCIA cards work with a lombard

There are several that use a certain chip set (can't
  recall the name
off hand) that works directly with Airport software.
   IMO this is the
way to go as it makes it more compatible. I was
  looking at using the

I had a specific need for this card that doesn't apply in your case. I didn't get it because
