Ok, so I tried PatchBurn, even thought the QPS (my external Firewire drive
brand) website says the drive should be supported by OS X. PatchBurn did not
find any writers. See applicable quote from their website below:

>>>PatchBurn 3 does not find any writer, although it is connected and switched
on. It asks me to save and send the logfile.
>>>A: This issue mostly appears with older CD writers connected via USB (like
Freecom, HP, Mitsumi, QPS or Sony) or SCSI. In Mac-OS X you will need a special
low level driver for the USB or SCSI interface. Contact the support of the
drives vendor to get this driver. After installing it, your writer should appear
in PatchBurn.

Both drives used to work fine -- this is a new issue. Both drives show up in
the System Profiler. I can't burn anything if the machine won't recognize
blanks!
