About six months ago, AppleCare told me that I couldn't even do that--that I was stuck with the drive I originally bought with my PowerBook (Ti G4 667 rev. 2). This struck me as draconian, but there didn't seem anything I could do about it. (Now that the computer is out of warranty I am planning on replacing the drive.)
