I shot an email off to the FD drive people, and they suggested that I
had to install OSX from the install CD's in order to make the drive
bootable. I was under the impression that duplicating the internal
drive to the FW using Drive Genius copied all all over.

One thing I didn't do--I didn't use Apple's Disk Utility to format the
drive--used the Drive Genius init command. I don't know if that'd
make a difference or not.

That showing-up-in-option-then-refusing-to-boot-off-that-disk thing is what I observed when I tried to boot off a USB drive, then googled to find that OS X still doesn't boot off USB - so I've seen it & know it's frustrating!!

Anyway, to address what the drive people said, I've booted off clones made using Carbon Copy Cloner and SilverKeeper, and both made perfectly bootable clones. So they're wrong about having to install X from the install CDs/DVD. But I can't speak for Drive Genius, which I've never even heard of, let alone tried.

I don't know that reformatting would make a difference - I would think if that were the problem you wouldn't see it at all in the list of bootable systems - but on this point I have nothing solid to go on.
