I've run into the same problem, but only with e-mail accounts from a
specific provider. It must have something to do with timeouts during
authentication on that specific server, as other accounts on different
server do not show this problem. I'm not sure if it's possible to tweak the
timeout limit in Mail.app. It is highly irritating indeed.
