Sandra,
With OS-X just backing up your drive may not give you a drive that
you can start from (which you could do prior to OS-X). Here are ways
to make a backup OS-X drive that can be a startup disk:
1. Use "Carbon Copy Cloner", or
2. Use "Tri-Backup", or
3. Use Apple Disk Utility (with care) as follows:
a. Open Disk Utility.
b. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
c. Click on the Restore tab in the main window.
d. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
e. Select the backup volume from the left side list and drag it into
the Destination entry field.
f. Check the box to Erase Destination (if you have not already
formated the backup drive).
g. Double check that you have the proper drives selected and then
click on the Restore button.
h. Go get a cup of coffee; this will take a while.
Once you have a backup drive capable of being used as a startup
disk, you and do the same thing to copy the backup drive to your new
internal drive.

I saw a horror story about it on one list

Retrospect doesn't seem to do the same total operational back in 10
that it did in previous OS versions. As I would rather not reinstall
all my software again from scratch, is there a simple way to move the
operating system to the new drive?
