When I got my rev 1 B&W, I was so hot to have a second internal HD that I
paid $129 in Nov., 1999 for the ProMax TurboMax PCI card that made a second
drive simple to install, and it could handle three more drives, as is. BTW,
the sales rep was very knowledgeable and patient, and ProMax used to
contribute a lot to the old B&W list.

I just checked their site (http://www.promax.com/) but didn't see the
TurboMax card sold separately anymore, just bundled with 1, 2, 4 or 5 IBM
drives ...

TurboMax never made any cards. They simply rebranded ACARD's cards.

The original TurboMax ProMax UATA/33 is a fine card. It was ACARD's first PCI
UATA design and ACARD contracted out the design of the firmware. The firmware
was nearly flawless.

The revised TurboMax ProMax UATA/66 is a bad card. It was ACARD's second PCI
UATA design and ACARD designed the firmware in-house. The firmware is so full
of bugs it is nearly worthless in its first eight or so incarnations. ACARD
should have contracted out the design of the firmware on this card, too.

At one point ACARD's UATA/66 card was marketed under the ACARD, TurboMax
ProMax and Sonnet Tempo names. These are all the very same cards and have the
very same flaws, if using the same revision of firmware.

Subsequently, ACARD made a deal with Sonnet whereby Sonnet became the
exclusive distributor of ACARD's UATA/66 card.

This prevented ACARD from directly marketing and supporting its card, and
also "locked out" TurboMax ProMax.

If you want a good, compatible UATA/66 card, get a UltraTek66 card.

Uh, yes, I own every model of UATA/33 and UATA/66 cards made for the Mac, and
I have tested all of these cards in a wide variety of configurations,
including configurations with double bus controllers and more than three
cards (9500 class) and configurations with three cards (many models in the
7500/7600/7200/7300/8500 and Beige G3 classes).
