Me too.

Right.
But is the first partition you make considered

Yes, the first partition starts at the outer (faster) area of the disk.
And does that mean you could make partition

It's working for me and at least one other person I know that way. However,
an Apple techie told me that it's best to put OS X first--that it wouldn't
work the other way!--so you take your chances, I guess. (Nothing in the
TIL's that I ever found supported that idea; I didn't follow her advice.
Perhaps I was just lucky, but I'd do it again the same way.) I was also
worried that OS X wouldn't know which of the OS 9.1 partitions I wanted to
use for Classic, but it picked the first partition with OS 9.1 it came to,
and that happened to be the one I wanted. (I had a backup 9.1 partition on
the disk too.)
Could someone please

You'll have to think about partitions and how she'll use them, her work
habits, and the kind of software she'll put on. Talk to her; it's not easy
making up your mind about stuff like that! Here are some things you might
want to think about:

Most of what you're looking for will be on the second page (linked at the
bottom of this page), but glance through this one first.
Make sure that you turn VM on prior to installing 9.1 if you're using the
OS X package to get 9.1, Pat. (You can turn VM back off later if you'd like
to.)
Good luck!
