Tom,

I have this happening on my beige G3 as well, and I have learnt just
to live with it. The (partial - anyone else feel free to jump in
here and add) explanation is that the onboard HD is IDE. But in the
startup sequence (this is addressed in the firmware of your computer)
the SCSI bus is polled for a startup device before the IDE bus. If
you disconnect any SCSI devices attached to your G3 b4 startup, then
it will locate the startup (IDE) volume quickly.

You can get around this by setting the startup drive in the 'Startup
Disk' control panel, but I find this doesn't work all the time (maybe
its just the way the OS is running on my G3). This is the suggested
fix.

Because this doesn't work on my computer 100% of the time, I have
learnt to live with it. Anyway, it gives me a chance to go get that
cup of coffee/tea before I sit down in front of my G3.

Cheers
