Marc, just wanted to ask you how you find your ADSL? I'm going to be taking
the plunge soon here in Italy; should be after September 30, when the phone
company (finally) loses its monopoly. I've really been looking at a new
telecom company that is using a form of fiber optical line that bypasses
the traditional phone company lines, offering a 5000 k connection (where
ADSL is 640 k, sorry if I never remember the abbreviations) in upload and
download, unlimited local and national long distance calls (in Italy you pay
for all phone calls by time connected, including local calls), and a popular
cable TV channel over fiber optic cable (which usually costs $25 a month
alone), all for the price of about $55 a month (where just your basic phone
line, not including even local calls, costs $13 a month!).
European countries are still somewhat behind, though deregulation this late
in the game may also offer the advantage of leap-frogging older technology;
we can only hope quality of service doesn't get lost in the rush.
