A modem is a modem but not a WinModem.  Avoid anything billed as a
WinModem.  Most were internal but there were external models also.  It
relies on the processor to do some of it's work and there is no software to
use one on a Mac.

Make sure the cable has hardware handshaking.  The only way to tell is if
it says it's hardware handshaking or to beep out the cable (check
electrical continuity between connectors.
