I want to thank everyone for all the great advice. Here�s what I did. I went straight to zapping the PRAM as per Marc's advice. I also read the guidance in Sad Macs, Bombs and other Disasters, 4th Edition. On page 800, the instructions said to shut down the Mac (do not use Restart). Then I held down the PRAM zapping keys after the startup chime, for 10 chimes. Now there is the usual 4 to 5 second delay from turn on to seeing the Happy Mac screen. Again, thanks.
