ADSL doesn�t bother the phone line at all and vice versa. There is a
splitter put on the phone jack so the phone uses the low end of the
bandwidth and the DSL is all up above.. Of course if you don�t have these
nifty filters on all the jacks with phones, they cut into the whole line and
will kick your ADSL offline.. :)
Im not sure but I thought ISDN required its own phone jack/line separate
from the rest of em..

As for the phone company doing it, all you need is something like PacBell's
voice messaging service and the disable call waiting feature.. Whenever you
used it to go on the net whoever calls will immediately go to your voicemail
and wont bother the phone line.. And yeah they do charge for it.. Comes with
all that Call Waiting/Forwarding/Caller ID junk you get with their
packages.. Pretty cheap though.
