well, then like i said your phone line may have something to do with it. there is a tradeoff between speed and being able to maintain a connection, and a fast connection may not mean better throughput if things have to keep being sent.
in any case, a broad band solution is probably your best bet, second best, if it works with x (some say yes, i think some say not well) is to get the griffin g-port so you have a serial port and use an external modem, externals are usually much better. the other thing to try is changing modem scripts, sometimes they can make a difference, you can even try one for another modem and may get better results, my modem isn't listed and works with several of the scripts but is faster with some of them. modem scripts are written in a language common to all modems, but different makers and software think things should be set differently, even when the basic modem design is identical. i'd get broad band myself if i could afford it, assuming i could find something other than a cable modem (i refuse to be on a massive and massively insecure lan!), problem is that i'm just out of the city limits. has anyone had any luck finding a dish based solution (yes, i know, it's also insecure, but mostly on the download side since you usually use your land line to send data, i'm not worried about people stealing what i download)?
