You might consider signing up for cable *and* keeping your old email address. I have set my internet access for the cable connection, but my mail to my old ISP for the same reason you give. It does cost a bit extra, but well worth it in terms of reliable, fast connection. You might ask your old ISP if they will give you a break for just hosting an email address since you will not be dialing up through their system.
