just remember that with a cable modem you MUST have a firewall. most people on cable modems report at least 4 incursion attempts a day, some more than that. even with a dialup and a dynamic ip i get an incursion attempt every couple of months, just had one last night in fact. without a firewall you don't even know when people are "probing" you (there's a disturbing thought..), and once they know your machine exist and has no firewall they'll be back latter.
true most of them are looking for pc's to break into, but macs do have some security holes in the os and it's just a matter of time before someone mac savvy tries to break in. if you're lucky they'll just steal your credit card numbers and software registrations (which will then wind up on bulletin boards on the web for all to use, and make your software vendor really happy, posibbly even disabling that registration code from working with future updates, that's what they usually do when the find the lists of registration codes). if you're not lucky, they'll steal your credit card info, buy themselves and thier friends some nice hardware or other toys, and wipe your drive for you, or leave behind a software bug so they can get your credit card info later, like the next time you buy something (possibly with another credit card for them to max out for you). fortunately most of them are just bored highschoolers running scripts they found on the web and don't understand enough to be too dangerous, but some of them do know what they are doing and can cause real havoc. you've been warned, no crying if you go without a firewall and get burned.
