China has had a social revolution since Deng separated ideology from
economics in the eighties. It is a lot closer to being a market economy and
a closer to democracy than the insane late-Maoist period. Democracy grows
out of middle-class aspirations, and the middle class is growing. (And it
still has a long way to go, before anyone wants to list the current and
recent evils.)
Closer to topic, the availability of fax, home PCs, Internet cafes, make
Big Brotherish mind control impossible in China now, though of course the
old guard still tries. 
See North Korea for what China would be like without trade engagement with
the world.
