In at least one install I did I had problems where it wouldn't function and the fix ended up being to swap slots with the PCI 10/100 Ethernet card I had installed. I don't know if it was a matter of the specific slot or the order of the cards. Launch Apple System Profiler and look at it Devices and Volumes, if the card is recognized it will show it as a USB card not generic. Also from the menus select "Show USB alerts and events..." and click on "Show all USB events".
