are the scratches and coating defect noticeable when actually using the monitor? they usually aren't, the brain filters things well and most don't affect the image much any way (the lens on the eye is comparable to the plastic lens on an old instamatic camera, the retina is worse, the brain does substantial image processing to make things usable). most likely, if you want to remove the rest of the coating, rubbing alcohol or window cleaner would do the trick, the monitor cleaner is likely alcohol based. i usually use rubbing alcohol and tissue paper to clean my monitors. i must confess i do get the odd finger print on them, and occasionally i'm forced to squash a bug on it, as at night it's one of the few light sources in the room often and hence where the bugs wind up, and they are hard to see through, and just plain annoying (i leave bugs alone outside usually, once it's in my living space, it's likely toast!). i also get a fair amount of oily dust on the monitor. some things do require a solvent like alcohol, i.e. anything grease based isn't likely to brush off well.
