That's because Quartz Extreme speeds up the Aqua interface, at the cost of
OpenGL performance. Some of the window display functions are offloaded onto
the OpenGL accelerator on your graphics card.

Since most people never use the OpenGL hardware acceleration capability in
their machines to the max, they won't notice this. But a benchmark will seek
out the difference immediately.

Not quite. PCI-66 is just about on par with 2xAGP. But PCI doesn't provide
access to main memory for texture storage, while AGP does. Since juggling
textures, texture memory is of paramount importance to Quartz Extreme.

I suspect this is the reason Apple chose to disable QE on anything but AGP
machines. Running QE with less than 32 MB of VRAM is not to be recommended,
either.

OpenGL performance is degraded. Interface processing is unloaded from the
CPU onto the GPU.
