Yes. For one, the GPU is more suited for doing certain things on screen than
the CPU, and secondly, the CPU will have more time to do other stuff if part
of the graphics processing is offloaded on the GPU.

G4 will also help speed up the interface quite considerably, not to mention
other tasks, too.

The first thing you'll want to do to speed up OS X is get more RAM. That's
the cheapest, most cost-effective. Next is the CPU, if you are on a G3 < 500
MHz. Then, it's time to consider upgrading your GPU.

Good, because Quartz Extreme can actually make games run slower. As I
understand it, when an app runs full screen in OS X, the interface is still
keeping track of all the windows underneath that cannot be seen. Because of
how QE works, valuable OpenGL processing power will be wasted on invisible
windows.
