I made the recent post earlier this week regarding multiple failed attempts to install
10.2 on a beige G3
that ended in a complete failure to startup any OS via a wide variety of startup
disks. I utilized the list suggestions of resetting the cuda switch and removing the
pram
battery, etc. They were moderately successful in that the install disks for OS 9
work and I have run and installed OS 9. Greedily I then attempted a 9.1 update. It
installed but froze while restarting. I then pulled and reseated the RAM cards,
the ROM Dimm, the PRAM battery and pushed the cuda switch again. OS 9.1 booted up
successfully and uneventfully for one startup only. Now OS 9.1 on the hard drive
freezes early on with extensions on or off.

I am confident that eventually i can get this G3 back to its original pre os 10.2
install state.
2 Questions, however:
1) The start up bong does not sound any more..and did not sound during that lastest OS
9.1 successful startup. Is this some symptom?
2) The only other difference between when OS 9.1 was running fine this summer and when
it is having issues post 10.2 is that I repartioned and reformatted the drives to be
HFS+ instead of the standard Mac format as Iattempted to install 10.2 and later as I
reformated again after the 10.2 install failure. Could this be a factor in the OS 9.1
problems?

thanks John
