The startup bong is stored in ROM on these machines, IIRC, and will occur as a result succesfully powering up the logic board and getting to on-board ROM in the boot process. This happens *before* any disk access, so it's unlikely to have anything to do with drive formats or even system versions. > 2) The only other > difference between when OS 9.1 was running fine this summer and when > it is having issues post 10.2 is that I repartioned and reformatted > the drives to be HFS+ instead of the standard Mac format as > Iattempted to install 10.2 and later as I reformated again after the > 10.2 install failure. Could this be a factor in the OS 9.1 problems? I'm kind of staggered that you were still using HFS instead of HFS+, actually. It's vastly superior...on the kinds of drives that shipped with G3's you were losing hundreds of megs of drive space. You may have driver problems, but a reformat should have taken care of this. This is beginning to sound as if there's a problem with the logic board. Try removing and reseating all removeable components: ram, cards, cables, processor, rom, etc. You may have a weak PRAM battery.(dunno if this has been covered or not) -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
