The startup bong is stored in ROM on these machines, IIRC, and will 
occur as a result succesfully powering up the logic board and getting to 
on-board ROM in the boot process.

This happens *before* any disk access, so it's unlikely to have anything 
to do with drive formats or even system versions.

I'm kind of staggered that you were still using HFS instead of HFS+, 
actually. It's vastly superior...on the kinds of drives that shipped 
with G3's you were losing hundreds of megs of drive space.

You may have driver problems, but a reformat should have taken care of this.

This is beginning to sound as if there's a problem with the logic board. 
Try removing and reseating all removeable components: ram, cards, 
cables, processor, rom, etc.

You may have a weak PRAM battery.(dunno if this has been covered or not)
