Some of the older zif upgrades did require upgrading the rev a rom, but the newer ones do not, according to OWC,
I can't see not upgrading to a G4 since they're not much more expensive anymore and the Altivec feature of the G4 is really useful in many applications now. I have4 a 466 mhz G4 zif from OWC (currently $185) in my Beige minitower and it works perfectly. By the way, OXC does recommend use of a cache enabler at least with my zif. Hope this helps.
