Actually, at the time, Apple *did* offer a ROM upgrade.

However...you have to remember.

This was *before* USB, essentially. The standard existed, but until the 
introduction of the iMac it was a minor interface, doomed to disuse and 
obscurity.

A few USB peripherals existed (after all, USB ports had been standard on 
PC's for at least a year or two by the time of the iMac introduction, 
even if enabling them on most PC's meant you had to disable the Sound 
card :-/ ) but they weren't very widespread.

Don't blame Apple for a problem that *didn't* exist at the time...
