What I also have done is install a 2nd hard drive and I defined

DO I have to make one drive the Master and the other the slave -
is cable decides not enough?

This is worth a try. With my recent problems, (on a Beige system) using a
slave on an Acard pci board, Acard tech support said that "cable" settings are
less surefire than traditional master/slave settings. I think if you use the
"cable" setting, you need to have both drives on that setting, or both using the
master/slave system. Here's a site I found while trying to figure out my
problem, that suggests this is true:

I'm wondering about X on the slave. You could try reversing the drive positions
on the cable, still in "cable" jumper settings just to keep everything else the
same.

Hope this is helpful.
