BBEdit Lite has a command "Zap Gremlins..." in the Text menu. Running this 
will eliminate the high ASCII characters in the file, which are probably 
most of your gibberish. There may be a lots of excess characters, still,
if they're low ASCII (i.e., belonging to the set that I'm typing this in.) 
Also, there may be a few characters in your messages that you actually
want to be able to read that will be zapped, but that's unlikely in email,
even with HTML.
