I would have never formatted the harddrives unless I try a million things to recover my data. I once spent a week trying to recover some of my files and it worked, I recovered plenty of stuff, you should have been patient on the format part. The art of owning a computer is NOT what you do to wreck it but what you do to recover & fix it. It sounds crazy but don't blame the terminal, you had the chance to try to fix it. I feek sorry for your nightmare though.
