I had a similar problem with my 7600...turned out to be a Iomega USB CDRW...if I didn't turn it on, my Mac would shut down fine, otherwise it would get to just the desktop background and hang. Do you have any peripherals attached? TRy unplugging them before turning on the iMac, using it, and seeing if it shuts down ok. Otherwise it's an extension conflict of some sort, I'll bet.
