Anders--- First thing I would like to know is what revision your G3/ Beige is.....because if you have Revision B or Revision C, then you will be able to run an EIDE Hard drive (PC) that is ATA 100, I do believe. Although I could be mistaken, I believe that with an ATA100 Hard drive, you *should* be able to snag a 60gb - 80gb hard drive for your system.
Otherwise, on the SCSI side of things, you can shoot for a 68-pin Ultra Wide (I've a 68-pin, 9gb UW in my G3/300 Beige, at the moment) or possibly an 80-pin Ultra Wide, provided your system is set up for it. Speed would be something else to consider...standard now is 7200 rpm which is pretty darn fast for spindle speed, although 10k rpm is blazingly fast. You'll find more than enough 4gb hard drives on Ebay....although you'll also find many 9gb and 18gb hard drives as well. For myself, I'm trying to find somebody willing to trade an AT/A66 or ATA/100 PC controller for mac for the new, still sealed SIIG Ultra ATA/133 dual channel pci controller for the "other kind of computers" I have. Let me know how you make out otherwise. Donald Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature.
