I'm looking around ebay for a harddrive for a Beige G3 and the tech speech drives me mad. I'm looking for a SCSI-drive, right? Wide? Ultra wide? How many pins? Any other buzzwords to look for?

And Bruce Johnson replied:

Beige G3's use IDE drives;

According to my research you could order them with either IDE or SCSI - they have connectors for both.

Anders: If your G3 already has a SCSI drive, add an IDE and have 2.

you can likely walk into the average office
or computer superstore and pick up a smoking deal (with rebates).

A 30 gb 7200 rpm drive for $70 after rebates and instant savings.

I just picked up a 40 Gig Maxtor 7200 rpm ATA 100 from Office Max a couple of weeks ago - $40 after rebates.

I put it's twin brother (that I pulled from a Winduhs machine) in my Revision A Beige G3 233 last week - and everything seems to be working fine (except the Mandrake Linux stuff, but the installer crashed on me when I was almost finished and I didn't go back and restart from the beginning).

Note this though: I don't think you can format an IDE drive with the version of Drive Setup that comes with 9.0. I seem to remember that I had to use the one that came with 9.1

The thing about ebay is that a lot of the Mac stuff goes for a bid
price that comes pretty close to what you can get it for from a
dealer with far less risk.

That's one of my ongoing complaints about eBayers. Too many nitwits who don't check retail pricing before they bid. Then there're the sellers who start the bidding $2 below retail...
