I recently purchased a used G4 450 DP, and have built it into the cheapest Final Cut system I could imagine. A key piece of the puzzle is the Sony GV-D200 Digital8 deck that I bought at a steep discount a couple of years ago when Sony was blowing them out. This little deck will play back regular8, Hi8, and Digital8. It records only in Digital8. What makes it really shine though, is the built in transcoder, which allows it to pass thru any analog video signal, converting it to a DV signal, then sending it out the Firewire port for easy capture into the Mac. It will also convert the DV output of the Mac back into analog video. Works like a champ with FCP or iMovie, in either OS9 or X.

For what it's worth, the specs between miniDV and digital8 signals are virtually identical. If you have old 8mm tapes, go for the Digital8.
