(Please correct me if this is wrong.) In other words, most DV cameras can be start and stopped, rewound and set to record or upload from iMovie or Final Cut. Cameras working through a transcoder are operated manually, though this isn't much of a problem.
Another advantage of the miniDV system is that each start and stop of the camera during recording is recognized by iMovie (and Final Cut Express if you tell it to do so) and saved as a seperate scene during uploading to the computer. This is very handy during editing. This doesn't happen when digitizing from an analog source and I don't think it works with Digital 8, though I could be wrong about the latter.
