I know that there was a Global Village modem control panel (used it for 
a while, from '93-'96). That was the only proprietary software I recall 
having from GV. But I've used the same modem with Apple's modem control 
panel quite successfully. 

The drivers/scripts are usually proprietary to some extent. Mostly 
because each company uses their own variation on the modem protocol. As 
stated though, Apple includes the modem scripts for GV and several 
other company's modems. They work perfectly well. I've never found a 
modem that couldn't be used with one of the provided scripts. Though 
there were times when a bit of trial and error were called for, my 
customer always had a useable modem setup when I was finished.
