global village did make a modem for the duo laptops that needed a custom driver. both
the apple stock modems and the global village modems in these are software based,
meaning they basically have an analog to digital converter and a digital to analog
converter and the powerbook does dsp to make things act like a modem, but there is no
hardware modem chipset involved, nearly everything is done in software just like some
of the cheap windows modems. the global village modem card doesn't work properly with
the apple software and vice versa, and both really slow the machine down as it uses a
lot of the processor power to listen and talk to the phone line and do the data
conversions etc.
