Need some feedback on a Power Mac G4 DP fan noise problem
The box is a model , Model M8840LL/A , brand new, right out of the retail box, since 17 July 03
This model does NOT boot up on OS9 Boot ROM is up to 4.6 ( Feb 2003)
Apple seems to have minimized their previous fan noise problem; unit runs fairly quiet. I operate the box in a non-air conditioned room ; can get to 85F room ambient , but do move some air around with an external 12" room fan. So far,I have not noticed any significant increase in fan noise( speed) over a full operating day. My CPU operating temperature measuring software indicates CPU temperature of between 53/55 C
Now here is my "problem(?):
Bad News:
When I command RESTART, as the boot up process starts , the fans spin up to some high speed , producing a very loud noise level. Sounds like a hair dryer.
Good news:
As the boot up process continues on , the fans slowly whine down to their normal low operating level and when the aqua screen appears, all fan noise has returned to its normal low level.
Another bit of information. I turn the box OFF over night. In the morning, when I power up, it does NOT exhibit the problem. After I run about a hour or so, commanding RESTART repeats the excessive fan noise anomaly. It would appear that this problem occurs when the box is running hot.
As in all Macs, start up management is controlled in ROM. Therefore, It would appear to me that during RESTART , fan speed control is being "lost" until some extension is loaded (?)
Has anyone out there with similar hardware either personally experienced this anomaly
and/or knows someone who has?
Contacting me off- line is not a problem
Before I rattle the cage with the Apple Technical Support people, I would first like to do some homework
Thanks to all that reply
