Anne,
What Len said.
I agree w/ evrything Len explained on broadband - one taste and you'll throw
your old modem away (except for the odd fax-out, but then, you'll have
attachments!). I've used it since its inception here in the Fort (Wayne),
and have loved it. My only difference in monthly cost was that my family had
been cable customers for a while, and being charter members of cable modem
service we got a "special deal" that's reflected in a lower monthly rate -
also, I own the cable modem (Lynksys) and don't have to pay the $7 monthly
rental.
Len's description of "one way access" (I'd never heard of it either) sounds
logical and accurate, unless their explanation was confusing terminology
with addresses itself, in other words your fee only buys one I.P. address (a
usual selling point is to sell multiple addresses for home networking use to
promote at-home "LANs" for file sharing, but don't do that! If and when
you're ready, get a router instead, and share the one address with your
multiple computers - definite added benefit that modem service can't
provide).
An added plus in my case: unbeknownst to me at the time of signup, I
discovered that there is a loop amplifier directly behind mt house. Hoo hoo!
My downloads average 2.5 - 3.2 mg per second, and various utilities clock
the service as T1 grade. No more AOL for me!! I doubt you'll miss Earthlink
once you've been able to port over your address list to ... whatever mail
service you darn well wish to use! :-)
Good luck, Anne.
