You have to have a phone line return. Do you want to invest in a dataline
for your cable modem? I bet it costs you more than the $8/mo extra for 2
way. It also limits upload speed to 33.6k or less. The modem has ti dlal
up before the cable modem syncs, which takes the usual time. Its an extra
thing to go wrong. You can't be a megaleech. You can't really serve back
anything.

In short: $77 v $85? This shouldn't even be a question.

Like DSL, when it works its sweet and when it doesn't expect long
downtimes.

DSL is considered voice service to telcos, which makes it a second class
citizen in teh world of connectivity. Cable has about the same same
standing with your provider, unless you're paying extra for a "business"
cable modem.

Most people I know with cable modems, from a handful of services, use
whatever suits their fancy. The people I know have a cable modem that is
basically a bridge, it takes a cable line in, it takes an ether in
from your coputer, and bridges the connection. There are probably cable
modems that have real routers built into them, but most people who want to
share their line among several PCs will invest in a $50 Linksys cable
router. The people I know, their modems also act as DHCP servers.
Essentially, if your mac has a 10 or a 100 base T ethernet connection and
supports DHCP, it shouldn't matter if the telco supports you or not.

Unless, of course, you need them to tell you how to configure your
computer. ALso, your mileage may vary, I seem to remember strange things
afoot with some cable companies back when I paid attention, which was
about two years ago.

See if your current provider will just give you an alias. People who mail
to your current address have the mail transparently sent on to your new
one. I bet they'd charge you for this.

When I ahd cable, my company provided a freebie dial up account. Many ISPs
subscribe to a service called Ipass. If you do alot of travelling, inquire
with your potential new ISP about these sorts of services.
