Bruce, I have a ROM version $77D.45F1 in my Beige G3. What do you recommend is a good upgrade card for this Mac. I am looking for a good balance of speed versus cost.
I'm happy with my OWC G4/450 I got for $175 on sale; it's currently $190 right now. Mines running comfortably at 466 MHz, which is the closest it can be set to it's advertised speed. (It runs at 450 in a B&W due to the different motherboard timings.)

Yes. You will have to check a component on the motherboard, a voltage inverter, iirc; the details are on OWC's site.
ROM versions seems to have no bearing on how well upgraded processors work.
Also, is your increase in speed very noticeable? In other words, was it worth the cost to upgrade?
Yes, but I also use apps (Photoshop, Terragen, Strata Studio Pro, iMovie) that definitely use the Altivec coprocesssor unit in the G4.
I actually never once booted with the original G3 beyond a 'boot up, yup it works' stage, but I'm happy with the speed compared to a G3/300 in the office...definitely spritelier, though the Radeon video card I have would have some to do with that as well.
