Bruce, I have a ROM version $77D.45F1 in my Beige G3. What do you recommend
is a good upgrade card for this Mac. I am looking for a good balance of
speed versus cost.

I'm happy with my OWC G4/450 I got for $175 on sale; it's currently $190 right now. Mines running comfortably at 466 MHz, which is the closest it can be set to it's advertised speed. (It runs at 450 in a B&W due to the different motherboard timings.)

What about the ROM version? Is the suggested OWC zif okay with what I have?

Yes. You will have to check a component on the motherboard, a voltage inverter, iirc; the details are on OWC's site.

ROM versions seems to have no bearing on how well upgraded processors work.

Also, is your increase in speed very noticeable? In other words, was it
worth the cost to upgrade?

Yes, but I also use apps (Photoshop, Terragen, Strata Studio Pro, iMovie) that definitely use the Altivec coprocesssor unit in the G4.

One often overlooked performance boost with the G4 is that your memory throughput will be roughly double that vs the equivalent speed G3.
This means that EVERY function performed by your computer will receive some boost in performance!
This is especially noticeable when working in the finder or doing things as simple as opening an app or resizing or moving a window.
