That's right. You'll have to make a choice. Some other options are to log the Mac out when not in use. Another physical option is to unplug the phone line when not in use.

When I had dialup I used to stay connected for days at a time. Not sure why you're so adamant against staying connected. If you're worried about the security of the Mac, enable it's firewall.
