My beige G3/233 seems to be happy with 10.2.8 on it. Is there any advantage to
going up to 10.3? Reading about all the features, improvments and bug fixes
certainly makes it attractive, but realistically from a user's point of view,
just how much difference will I see? I use the machine for some Photoshop/
Illustrator work, word processing and the web e-mail thing.
If speed is an issue, you may want to consider a ZIF upgrade. You can pick up a G4/533 for ~$150 from OWC, which would make Photoshop run *muuuuch* better. I'd be afraid of actual usefulness of it on a 233/10.3 config. I know iPhoto is unbearably slow on my 300, so much so that I have stopped using it except in "emergencies" :)
I can't stress it enough....ADD RAM. 10.3 is memory hungry, and performs best when it's well fed. I've found that with enough ram, a G3/400 does *everything* I need, but the 320megs on the 300 can't even compare, allowing me to load only a few applications before the drive starts chattering for swap space.
I'd also like to get an internal CD burner (preferably a DVD RW) to replace the---->
stock CD-ROM. Is there any particular units that just drop in without me having
to fuss around with OS and drivers and other things?
Check the xlr8yourmac.com drive rating database. I'm sure you'll find several others with a similar config, complete with their trials and tribulations of its use. I've successfully swapped various optical drives between macs and PC's for years, with the only caveat being a few un-bootable drives (won't boot from CD-ROM).
