Well -- your router is a 802.11g (compatible to b) Wireless thingy. You
need something to talk to it  and apple calls that airport for the "b"
(11Mbit/s) and airport extreme for the "g" (54 Mbit/s) standard. 

There are reports on www.lowendmac.com using different hardware (PC
market) which have the same chipset as the airport stuff.
