Just to clarify this a bit further, it HAS TO BE LESS THAN 8 Gb! I tried exactly 8 Gb and the OSX installer would have none of it! And if you plan to boot into OS 9 on that drive, be sure to install the OS 9 drivers.
This is my understanding of the 8Gb limit from reading Apple's docs.
Early G3 models have a limitation on where on an IDE drive they can load the OS from. SCSI drives don't have this problem. The Mac OS X must load from within the first 8Gb of the disk. I don't know just how much of the OS has to be within this 8Gb. The OS X installer will not install on these machines unless the boot volume is entirely within this 8Gb limit. This is simply done to prevent possible problems now or later.
It's possible to run OS X on a larger partition if the install is done on a machine without this limitation and then moved to an early G3. The problem with doing this is that at some point in the future the critical OS file(s) may get moved to a point beyond the 8Gb limit at which point it won't boot. This could be due to subsequent installs or re-installs of the OS, defragmenting the HD or other processes that may move the key file(s).
I don't know about IDE drives using a PCI card controller. Under OS 9 these typically show as a SCSI drive but under OS X they appear as IDE.
