For a beige with OSX you have one choice: ATI Radeon 7000. You can get the Mac addition, or you can attempt to purchase a cheaper PC clone and flash it yourself. This may not be feasable, anymore. There's been discussion about flashing the PC cards here, no doubt this'll spark some more. :) > - Are there inexpensive ways (overclocking perhaps?) to speed this > machine up, or is a processor upgrade the best bet? I overclocked my old 233 to 280. It was marginally faster, but not as much as I'd have hoped. I then put a G4/450 upgrade in, and clocked it at 500. That made a difference. If you're on the cheap, go ahead and overclock it but prepare to deal with flakiness. The video card made a more noticable difference in apparant speed than the CPU upgrade did. Don't forget, the hard drives utilize an older, slower transfer mode (PIO 3 for IDE, SCSI-2 for SCSI, of course) and not a modern, snappy one (UDMA 66/100/133 for IDE, Ultra/U2/Wide/U2W/etal for SCSI). Putting a controller with improved transfer in, and a matching drive can also be feasable. A new drive, 7200rpm and UDMA 133 (133mb/sec burst), would blaze by the old 5400rpm and PIO 3 (16.6mb/sec burst) drive. On the other hand, a beige motherboard has three PCI expansion slots. If you put a video card in one, and a drive controller in the second, that's gonna leave you with one which will probably be for a USB, Firewire, or USB/Firewire controller card. And with that goes all your expansion slots. -- http://www.infotainment.org <-> more fun than a poke in your eye. http://www.eighteenpercent.com <-> photography and portfolio. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
