The router connects to the modem and provides all the authentication required, after you type it in on the router's admin page. I have several Windoze and macs on my network at home, and I use a DSL modem plugged into a router, which is plugged into a switch.
Everybody has internet without authenticating, through the one ip address obtained by the router.
I just installed panther as well, and had no problem connecting over the net. If you are going through a router, you shouldn't have any problem. I don't know why it's not working for you, unless you have a firewall or something that is preventing the communication.

Or, was anything wonky with your internet service on that particular day? Have you tried again?

I'm no DSL expert (I work for a cable high speed provider) but I thought most DSL services require authentication. I presume when you get this error that you can surf the web and retrieve email?
