Those are GREAT prices, but as a computer-savvy end user who gets called upon to fix many machines for beer (well OK I don't drink much so I'm _really_ cheap support), I LOVE to support the non-circuit-city, local stores who have the chutzpa and the know-how to stock seldom-selling but SUPER useful techie nicknacks like this.
If I have one such shop near, I try to use them as much as I can, so that when I need that oddball SCSI adapter or cable, or whatever, there's a chance that someone at the store will have )seen one ) bothered to stock it. Such shops are worth their weight in gold, and are getting harder to find in most markets.
I agree that the small local shop is a great resource. And, yes, I have spent 29.99 for the SCA SCSI adapter that I needed in a hurry instead of getting it for 10-13 off ebay or the swap list. My local shop is also a great resource for small accessories (Logitech optical mice for $12 for example).
However, when I have the time to wait and being the cheapskate that I am (this is the Low End Mac list, remember), I do not hesitate to go the cheap route when I can. But when I can't, I do go to the local shop instead of the big box stores. I try and patronize the smaller local shops when I can and it doesn't hurt the wallet too much, but sometimes it is just too painful to buy from the small shop. I support a number of systems for my business and family (way too many windows boxes) and when I need a modem fast it is either compusa for $20 or the small shop for $45.
That is also the reason that whenever I travel, I always try and hit the local restaurant instead of the chains. I have had many great meals for a decent price and some that I still am unable to forget no matter how hard I try, but at least it is an adventure instead of the guaranteed mediocrity at the chains. And it is the same with computer stores, there are always hidden gems, and some that you really want to forget.
