ah ha! now that makes sense! apple was probably thinking the same thing they were thinking when they came up with their own digital monitor interface, or the interface on the 6100-8100 macs, or the cdrom driver that didn't support third party cd roms unless you bypassed the code that checked the brand, etc. i.e., greed and stupidity and the need to be control freaks, a common ailment amongst large companies. it's also possible that atto wrote the good firmware for macs later and that apple had tried to write their own early on and had some unresolved timing bugs but decided to go ahead with it anyway, that or like you said, they were deliberately crippling it.
