I could not boot from the FireWire drive at all. I booted from an 
internal 40 GB IBM Deskstar with OS 10.3.5. I used the restore feature 
of Disk Utility to move OS X from the FireWire HD to a 2nd HD in my G3 
that was a freshly wiped IBM HD. That act returned my ability to send 
mail to this list and another Low End list. It also gave me confidence 
in my backup scheme. I used CCC and also SilverKeeper 1.1.1 by La Cie. 
I found the later easy to use for backing up to a FireWire HD.
