Thanks Bruce, that's a good thought, but all three drives are externally powered, each with its own power supply, plugged into a big APC battery backup. They're all OWC FireWire Mercury drives, one of them a FW 40-type 120-gig, and the other two FW-800 250-giggers. Any other idea what the trouble might be? I lose these drives off the desktop a couple times a day now, and have to go wiggling and replugging their cables to get them back again, a real pain in the neck.

Flaky FW ports? OWC sells a 2-port FW card for $10, might be worth getting one to test. That's only for the 400 drive, unless the 800 drives have 400 ports too.

Flaky cables? (My cats love to gnaw on computer cables. I have a SCSI cable at home that looks like it's been used as a bulletin board it's got so many little holes in it. Needless to say, it doesn't work as a SCSI cable any more...) if they're daisy chained all it takes is one to go bad.

Maybe check the sleep settings? Try turning it off and seeing if the problem recurs.

Try logging on as a different user, that'll tell you if it's some odd prefs problem (though I doubt it....this sounds like hardware juju.)
